Reading needs to be fun. Books that challenge the reader can be great, but when pupils are still taking ‘baby steps’ with their Mother Tongue at lower primary, there is a need to focus on making reading an enjoyable habit. Thus, at Geylang Methodist’ School (Primary), MOE Kindergarten (MK) readers are used as scaffolding tools in the Primary 2 classroom to introduce simple reading to pupils. Our pupils feel affirmed when they realise that they too can read and are then ready to progress to the Primary readers. By the end of the year, they would have progressed from being mere readers to becoming writers!
The habit of reading also helps readers decipher new words and phrases that they come across in everyday life. It has been observed that Primary 3 Lower Progress (LP) pupils need support to build their vocabulary so that they become more confident in their speaking and writing skills. Using The Singapore Teaching Practice as a guide, the school has developed a ‘Drop Everything And Read’ (DEAR) programme for these pupils.
In this programme, teachers introduce MK readers during remediation. Through story-telling activities, the LP pupils are motivated to speak in Tamil and then gradually introduced to reading Tamil books.
Our presentation will share the types of activities we use in the classroom to cultivate interest in reading among pupils. Visiting this booth will enable parents and educators to take away tips on how to support their children in reading MTL storybooks.
வாசிப்புப்பழக்கம் மனத்திற்கு மகிழ்வூட்டும். இருப்பினும் தமிழ்மொழியை இரண்டாம் மொழியாகப் பயிலும் கீழ்த்தொடக்கநிலை மாணவர்களுக்கு வாசிப்புப் பழக்கம் சவால்மிக்கதாக அமைகிறது. இச்சவாலை மாணவர்கள் எளிதாக எதிர்கொள்ளக் கல்வி அமைச்சுத் தயாரித்துள்ள பாலர்பள்ளி சிறுவர் கதைப் புத்தகங்கள் பெரிதும் உதவுகின்றன. இப்புத்தகங்களில் இடம்பெற்றிருக்கும் கதைகள் எளிய மொழிநடை கொண்டு அமைந்தவை. அதனால் இக்கதைகளை மாணவர்களால் சுயமாகப் படிக்க முடிந்தது. இது அவர்களுக்கு நம்பிக்கை ஊட்டியது. இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, மாணவர்களுக்கு வாசிப்பில் ஆர்வம் அதிகரிக்கத் தொடங்கியது. அதன் விளைவாக, தேன் தமிழ்ச் சிறுவர் கதைப் புத்தகங்களை மாணவர்கள் சுயமாக வாசிக்க முற்பட்டார்கள். மாணவர்கள் தொடர்ந்து வாசித்ததன் பலனாக, அவர்களது எழுத்துத் திறனும் ஆண்டிறுதியில் மேம்பட்டது.
தொடக்கநிலை 3 மாணவர்கள் சிலருக்குப் போதுமான சொல்வளம் இல்லாததால், அவர்கள் சரளமாகவும் தன்னம்பிக்கையுடனும் தமிழில் உரையாடத் தயங்கினர். ஆதலால், மாணவர்களது சொல்வளத்தைப் பெருக்குவதற்காகக் சிங்கப்பூர்க் கற்றல் முறைமையின் வழிகாட்டுதலோடு வாசிப்புத் திட்டம் ஒன்று உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. இத்திட்டத்தின்வழி, ஆசிரியர் மாணவர்களுக்கு வாசித்தலை முறைப்படி கற்றுக்கொடுத்ததோடு அதுசார்ந்த நடவடிக்கைகளும் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. இத்திட்டத்தினால் மாணவர்கள் பெரிதும் பயனடைந்தனர். இத்திட்டத்தின் உத்திமுறைகள், அது தொடர்பான நடவடிக்கைகளைப் பற்றிய தகவல்களை இந்தக் கண்காட்சிக்கூடத்தில் அறிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.
மேலும், மாணவர்களிடையே வாசிப்புப் பழக்கத்தை ஊக்குவிக்கும் நோக்கில் மேற்கொள்ளப்படும் நடவடிக்கைகளைப் பற்றிய விவரங்களும் காட்சிக்கூடத்தில் இடம்பெறும். கல்வியாளர்களும் பெற்றோர்களும் தங்கள் பிள்ளைகளைத் தாய்மொழிக் கதைப்புத்தகங்கள் வாசிக்க ஊக்குவிப்பதற்குத் தேவையான குறிப்புகளையும் இங்குப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளலாம்.
